MANOA VALLEY HOUSE
Manoa Valley is a quaint historic neighborhood developed as one of Oahu’s first residential neighborhoods beginning the 1910s. The neighborhood is identifiable for its large grassy lanes void of concrete sidewalks, large monkeypod trees that adorn the generous front lawns of large mansions, and the small organically-laid narrow back roads. Manoa Valley is known for its cool trades and rainy weather. Dr. and Mrs. Ron Yanagihara are moving back to their hometown of Manoa after living and practicing in California for most of their adult life.
Their craftsman-style home was built in 1926 and went through at least two alterations since. They purchased this home a few years ago and wanted to upgrade it and enlarge it before their return. We altered their home to include modern amenities and additions, while retaining the original charm of the house. The front porch area, which had been enclosed and extended over time, was removed, and a porch of similar character will be built in its place. The new porch is five feet deeper than the original and a bedroom will be set in the left-hand corner such that the porch no longer runs the full length of the house. In the rear, the basement garage was removed and enlarged. However, the new additions maintain a character similar to the original house.
