This project was to provide a complete design, including detailed drawings, specifications, and cost estimates to construct the new ramp structure to meet an existing classroom building for the Lihikai Campus. “Portable 17” is a small 650 SF single-story building elevated on posts and piers on a slightly sloping site. It is being used by special needs kindergarten and first grade students. This project calls for an addition of a handicap access ramp (4’-6’ wide) to the two front entries of the building. The design concept is to connect the covered walkway of Building D to the portable structure (P-17) via a concrete and wooden ramp/ walkway. The existing entry stairs were removed and replaced with a larger 6-0” wide wooden deck area which can be used as an exterior gathering space for students- creating a different learning environment. The area around the concrete walkway/ramp is bermed and landscaped so that the surrounding grade level will match the new ramp elevation. Thus, a single handrail suffices for the ramp and no guardrails were needed-creating an open and kid-friendly learning environment.
